Mumbai Police have returned 238 recovered mobile phones, 19 motorcycles and other valuables collectively worth Rs 2.3 crore to their rightful owners after a special recovery drive across several South Zone-1 jurisdictions.
The handover took place at a ceremony at Prerna Hall near Azad Maidan, where Manish Kalvaniya, Deputy Commissioner of Police, South Zone-1, returned the property to citizens. The programme was held on Friday, with 150 invited beneficiaries attending and receiving their recovered phones, motorcycles and other valuables.
The recovery operation covered the jurisdictions of Colaba, Cuffe Parade, Marine Drive, Azad Maidan, MRA Marg, Dongri and Sir J J Marg police stations. The police said the recovered items included 238 stolen mobile phones and 19 motorcycles, along with other valuables that together were valued at Rs 2.3 crore.
According to the report, the mobile phones were traced using the Central Equipment Identity Register, or CEIR, portal, along with technical investigations. CEIR is used to identify and track mobile devices through their equipment identity details. The police also relied on confidential information to recover the motorcycles and other valuables.
The operation illustrates the role of technology and station-level investigations in reuniting citizens with property reported stolen or lost. In the case of mobile phones, the CEIR-based process provided investigators with a digital route to trace devices, while the recovery of vehicles and other items involved information gathered through police investigations.
The handover programme also brought the recovery process into a public setting rather than limiting it to individual police station communications. Of the owners invited to the ceremony, 150 attended in person to collect their belongings. The beneficiaries thanked and congratulated Mumbai Police after receiving the recovered property.
The operation involved multiple police station jurisdictions within South Zone-1, indicating that the recovered property was not linked to a single locality. The police account did not provide a separate breakdown of the number of items recovered from each jurisdiction or the individual value of the phones, motorcycles and other valuables.
The ceremony concluded with the return of the recovered property to the attending owners. The supplied report did not specify any further recovery target, investigation deadline or additional programme planned by South Zone-1.
