Pune’s Shivajinagar ST bus stand will be redeveloped into a modern bus port under a joint development agreement between the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) and Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MahaMetro), bringing the city’s bus, metro and railway facilities into a planned transport hub.
The memorandum of understanding was signed in the presence of Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Sunetra Pawar, and Transport Minister and MSRTC chairman Pratap Sarnaik. The project is intended to provide more integrated and convenient transport facilities for Pune residents and passengers travelling to the city from across Maharashtra.
The proposed development will cover MSRTC’s 15,400-square-metre site at Shivajinagar. MahaMetro has already constructed the Shivajinagar Metro station on approximately 4,900 square metres of the land. The remaining 10,500 square metres is planned for the bus port and associated commercial development.
The planned facility will include an ST bus terminal, a bus depot, bus parking, commercial and office space, and passenger amenities. Direct connections with the metro and railway stations are also proposed, with the stated objective of creating an integrated multimodal transport centre at Shivajinagar.
MahaMetro has been appointed as the project implementation authority. The development will be taken up under a public-private partnership model, while the final form of the project will be determined after assessing its feasibility, financial valuation and market demand. The supplied announcement does not specify a construction cost, completion deadline or the private partners who may participate in the project.
The redevelopment has also affected current bus operations. The existing Shivajinagar ST bus stand has been temporarily shifted to the Aare Dairy premises at Wakdewadi to facilitate construction-related work. MahaMetro has provided the basic infrastructure required for the temporary bus stand.
The temporary arrangement is expected to continue until construction of the new Shivajinagar bus terminal is completed, after which ST bus operations will return to the original site. The agreement places the project within a wider transport interchange that is already anchored by metro and railway infrastructure, although details of the construction schedule and implementation phases have not yet been announced in the supplied report.
The next formal steps are expected to involve feasibility assessment, financial evaluation and determination of the development model before the project takes shape on the remaining MSRTC land.
