BMTC Bus Fare Hike Hits Short Trips Hardest in Bengaluru

The BMTC bus fare hike has increased the cost of short-distance travel most sharply in Bengaluru, with the minimum fare for a two-kilometre journey rising from ₹6 to ₹10 and the fare for four kilometres increasing from ₹12 to ₹18, according to a report by Prajavani – Bengaluru published on November 5, 2026.

The revised fare structure shows that passengers travelling one or two stages will face a larger proportional increase than those travelling longer distances. The fare for a six-kilometre journey has risen from ₹18 to ₹25. For the longest distance listed in the BMTC fare table, 48 kilometres, the fare has increased from ₹35 to ₹44.

The changes affect routes from Kempegowda Bus Station, commonly known as Majestic, to several destinations. A two-kilometre trip to areas such as Magadi Road 1st Cross and Maharani College now costs ₹10, compared with ₹6 earlier. Journeys to Corporation and Shivajinagar, listed at four kilometres, have risen from ₹12 to ₹18. The six-kilometre fares to Shanthinagar and Yeshwanthpur have increased from ₹18 to ₹25.

For longer routes, the revised fares from Majestic include ₹30 for an eight-kilometre journey to Hebbal or Lakkasandra, ₹35 for a 10-kilometre journey to Jayanagar or Banashankari, and ₹38 for an 18-kilometre journey to Jambu Savari Dinne or Madanayakanahalli. The fare to Nelamangala, listed at 26 kilometres, has risen from ₹30 to ₹40. The 48-kilometre journey to Sampangere now costs ₹44, up from ₹35.

The report also lists revised fares for services connecting Bengaluru with surrounding towns. Fares to Nelamangala and Hoskote have increased from ₹35 to ₹44, while journeys to Doddaballapura and Anekal have risen from ₹38 to ₹47. The fare to Magadi and Malur has increased from ₹46 to ₹57.

Airport-bound Vayu Vajra air-conditioned buses have also become more expensive. The increase ranges from ₹15 to ₹35 depending on the boarding point. From Banashankari, the fare to Kempegowda International Airport has risen from ₹295 to ₹325. The fare from Kadugodi has increased from ₹305 to ₹325, while the fare from Kuvempu Nagar has gone up from ₹335 to ₹350. The fare from Sarjapur has risen from ₹375 to ₹400, and from Electronic City from ₹380 to ₹400.

The airport fare from Kempegowda Bus Station has increased from ₹265 to ₹300. Fares from Whitefield and Royal Meenakshi Mall have risen from ₹300 to ₹325 and ₹315 to ₹325 respectively. The fare from Attibele is now ₹425, compared with ₹405 earlier.

The report quoted a worker, Vinay, as criticising the increase and saying that household expenses had already risen. M.R. Venkatesh, a former BMTC vice-president, also opposed the revision, while Legislative Council member T.A. Saravana described the fare increase as a burden on the public. The supplied report did not include a separate BMTC or state government statement explaining the revised fare structure or its implementation timeline.
