Namakkal residents can apply for subsidised home and terrace garden kits under the Tamil Nadu government’s Vetri Illatharasi Veettu Thottam scheme, with the district receiving a target of 100 beneficiaries for the 2026-27 financial year.
The scheme is intended to help households grow vegetables and fruits in limited spaces and at lower cost. According to a statement issued by Namakkal Collector Madhubalan and reported by Dinamalar, the initiative has been introduced in response to rising vegetable prices and concerns linked to the use of chemical fertilisers and pesticides.
The terrace garden kit is priced at Rs 1,450, but eligible beneficiaries can obtain it for Rs 725 after a 50 per cent subsidy. One person can receive up to two kits under the programme. The State has set a target of 1,500 terrace garden kits for 2026-27, of which 100 have been allocated to Namakkal district.
The programme also includes financial support for shade-net structures. A shade net covering 100 square feet, with 50 per cent shading capacity, will be provided at a subsidised cost of Rs 3,500, representing a 50 per cent subsidy on the total cost stated in the district announcement.
Households can also apply for vegetable seed kits containing six varieties: tomato, brinjal, chilli, okra, greens and cluster beans. These kits are available at Rs 15 after a 75 per cent subsidy. The scheme further offers fruit plant kits containing guava, jackfruit, papaya, custard apple and lemon plants for Rs 25 after a 75 per cent subsidy.
The initiative places small-scale food production within household spaces, including terraces and other limited areas. Its stated objective is to enable residents to grow produce for household use while reducing dependence on vegetables purchased from the market. The district announcement does not specify the eligibility criteria beyond the application process or provide details on the delivery schedule for approved applicants.
Applicants from Namakkal can submit their requests through the official website of the Tamil Nadu Horticulture Department at https://tnhorticulture.tn.gov.in/kit/. The online portal is the designated channel identified in the Collector’s announcement for accessing the subsidised kits and associated benefits.
The availability of the kits, seed varieties, fruit plants and shade-net support makes the programme broader than a single terrace-gardening package. However, the number of beneficiaries in Namakkal will remain limited by the district target of 100 terrace garden kits for the 2026-27 year. Further operational details, including application verification and distribution dates, will be communicated through the horticulture department’s process.
