The Telugu Desam has returned to power in the Nellore Municipal Corporation after 21 years, with its candidate Poluboina Roop Yadav securing the mayor’s post and the TD-led alliance winning a majority in the 72-division civic body.
Yadav secured a majority of 80,170 votes in the mayoral election, marking the first time the Telugu Desam has held the mayor’s post since Nellore was upgraded from a municipality to a municipal corporation in 2004.
The result ends the YSRC’s recent dominance of Nellore’s civic administration. The YSRC had won all 54 divisions in the November 2021 corporation elections and installed Potluri Sravanthi as mayor.
Sravanthi resigned in December 2025 after a no-confidence motion was initiated against her amid defections of YSRC corporators to the ruling TD. Deputy mayor Roop Kumar Yadav subsequently served as in-charge mayor before Devarakonda Sujatha was elected mayor in February 2026.
The latest result gives the TD-led alliance control of the corporation’s political leadership and a majority in its elected body. The change follows a period of continuing movement among corporators and changes in the mayoral leadership, making control of the corporation a key measure of the wider political shift in Nellore.
The Telugu Desam’s previous period in control of Nellore’s civic body ran from 2000 to 2005, when Tallapaka Anuradha served as municipal chairperson. Her husband, T Ramesh Reddy, had also headed the Nellore municipality.
Nellore’s elevation to municipal corporation status towards the end of 2004 created a new civic administrative structure. Congress took charge of the newly constituted corporation, with Pulimi Sailaja becoming its first mayor in September 2005. She was later succeeded by T Bhanusree amid political disagreements within the party.
The YSRC captured the corporation during the 2014–19 period, when Shaik Abdul Aziz became mayor. Aziz later switched allegiance to the Telugu Desam. The party’s 2021 sweep had then placed the YSRC in complete control of the corporation’s elected divisions.
The latest verdict changes that balance and places the TD-led alliance at the helm of Nellore’s civic administration. The corporation’s next phase will be led by Roop Yadav following his mayoral victory and the alliance’s majority in the civic body.
