India’s engineering capabilities have reached new heights with the completion of the Pamban Bridge, a significant infrastructure project that will not only improve transportation but also boost tourism. This newly built bridge, celebrated as one of the most iconic structures by Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd (RVNL), connects the town of Mandapam in mainland India to Pamban Island and the pilgrimage town of Rameswaram.
The Pamban Bridge is a 2.05 km long structure with 100 spans of 18.3 meters each, along with a 63-meter navigational span. This bridge stands 3 meters higher than the existing one, offering a navigational air clearance of 22 meters above sea level. In comparison to the old bridge, which was manually operated, the new Pamban Bridge features modern electro-mechanical control systems interlocked with the train control systems. This system, equipped with a counterweight mechanism, allows smoother operation while consuming less electricity.
One of the most impressive features of the Pamban Bridge is its vertical lift span, which is unique in India and only the second of its kind in the world. This design enables the bridge to lift for ships and cruise liners to pass under, offering a full horizontal width of 63 meters for smooth passage. Ships wishing to pass will have to coordinate with the maritime department, which will halt train operations for approximately two hours to allow safe passage. The project, executed by RVNL at a cost of Rs 535 crores, will allow trains to operate at higher speeds, improving overall connectivity between Rameswaram Island and the mainland. The completion of this bridge is a major step forward in modernizing Indian Railways’ infrastructure. It will not only ease transportation but also cater to the increasing traffic of tourists and pilgrims visiting the renowned Ramanathaswamy Temple in Rameswaram.
