Bengaluru Achieves Precast U-Girder Milestone for Railway Project

In a significant step forward for Bengaluru’s rapidly expanding urban transport infrastructure, K-RIDE has unveiled India’s longest precast U-girder, which spans an impressive 31 metres. This milestone was marked on December 17, 2024, as the U-girder was launched on the Mallige Line of the Bengaluru Suburban Railway Project (BSRP) at Yeshwantpur. The project, which aims to ease the city’s growing traffic woes, will connect Baiyappanahalli to Chikkabanavara, significantly improving connectivity across the city.

The U-girder, cast at Gollahalli earlier in the year, is designed to facilitate faster and more efficient construction of the suburban railway corridor. In a city where traffic congestion has long been a serious challenge, the introduction of such advanced infrastructure aims to meet the growing demand for an integrated public transport system. Unlike the typical 28-metre U-girders used in metro projects, this innovation allows for more extended spans between foundations, thus reducing the number of piers and minimising construction time. Each U-girder weighs a staggering 178 tonnes and uses 69.5 cubic metres of M60-grade concrete, highlighting the scale and complexity of the project.

The use of longer U-girders in the BSRP is not only a technical achievement but also a step towards more sustainable urban infrastructure. Precast U-girders are known for their high-quality construction and ability to expedite projects by reducing the need for on-site casting, lowering the overall environmental impact of construction. As Bengaluru grapples with urbanisation, these innovations present an opportunity to build more efficiently while minimising disruption and maximising sustainability. The Mallige Line is expected to play a crucial role in encouraging more residents to shift to public transport, reducing reliance on private vehicles and thus contributing to lowering the city’s carbon footprint.
