The Pimpri-Nigdi Metro extension in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad is being planned for service in 2027, with MahaMetro managing director Shravan Hardikar outlining the project’s progress and wider expansion roadmap at a press conference. The supplied report says the project is about 54.90 per cent complete, but it gives two different milestones for the extension that require clarification.
According to the report, MahaMetro is planning to start metro services on the Pimpri-Nigdi route by the end of June 2027. It separately states that the extension up to Nigdi has a target of being opened to passengers by the end of February. The report does not explain whether the February target refers to a partial opening, a specific construction milestone or an earlier service deadline.
The Pimpri-Nigdi extension is part of Pune Metro’s second phase and is intended to extend the network further into Pimpri-Chinchwad. The route is among the projects being advanced as MahaMetro works on expanding the city’s existing metro system. No station-wise details, revised construction schedule or operational plan were provided in the supplied report.
Hardikar also provided updates on other projects in the Pune metropolitan region. Work on the underground Swargate-Katraj route is continuing, with traffic diversions being implemented with police assistance to accelerate construction. MahaMetro has stated that the entire project is planned for completion and commencement of metro services by 2029.
A memorandum of understanding is also expected to be signed soon with the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation for the Shivajinagar State Transport bus station. The report says work at the Shivajinagar site will begin after the agreement is completed, indicating that the project’s immediate next step is an institutional arrangement between the two agencies.
For the Khadakwasla route and depot, the tender has been issued and survey work is under way. Land acquisition for the proposed metro depot at Khadakwasla is also in progress. MahaMetro is additionally preparing a detailed project report for a future metro connection to the planned international airport at Purandar, with a specialised agency expected to be appointed for the assignment.
The Pimpri-Nigdi extension’s reported 54.90 per cent completion figure and the two separate 2027 milestones now need to be reconciled through an official project schedule. Until MahaMetro clarifies the February and June targets, the final date for passenger services on the route remains uncertain.
