Kurkumbh MIDC Pollution Concern Rises as Well Water Turns Green

Kurkumbh MIDC pollution concerns have intensified in Daund taluka of Pune district after a farmer reported greenish water and a strong odour in his well, raising fresh questions about the safety of groundwater used by nearby agricultural households.

The affected well belongs to farmer Mohan Anna Bhosale in Kurkumbh, according to a report by Pudhari. A green layer was visible on the water, while the surrounding area was also reported to have been affected by suspected contamination. The unusual colour and odour have led to concern over whether the water can safely be used for farming.

The report does not establish the source of the contamination or confirm that industrial effluent from Kurkumbh MIDC caused the condition. However, it has brought the management of industrial wastewater in the estate back into focus. Questions have been raised about whether wastewater from the industrial area is being treated adequately, whether untreated discharge could be entering the ground, and whether existing drainage arrangements are being properly monitored.

Kurkumbh MIDC has supported industrial expansion, employment and economic activity in the area. At the same time, the reported condition of the well has renewed concerns among farmers and residents about the effect of industrial activity on natural water sources. For communities dependent on wells for agriculture, any deterioration in water quality can affect decisions about irrigation and crop use, even before the cause is scientifically confirmed.

The report calls for the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board to inspect the well without delay and send water samples for laboratory testing. It also seeks an examination of the industrial estate’s wastewater treatment facilities, drainage network and the wastewater-management systems operated by individual industries.

Laboratory analysis will be necessary to determine the nature and extent of any contamination and whether it is connected to industrial discharge. The reported green appearance and strong odour are observations that require technical assessment; they do not, by themselves, identify the pollutant or prove the pathway by which it may have reached the well.

Residents are seeking action from the administration and asking whether the authorities will investigate the matter seriously. The immediate official steps sought are an inspection of the affected well, collection and testing of samples, and scrutiny of wastewater treatment and drainage systems within Kurkumbh MIDC. The report does not record that these inspections or tests have yet been completed.
