Noida Gets New Joint Police Commissioner as Security Duties Expand

IPS officer Sankalp Sharma has been appointed the new Joint Police Commissioner of the Gautam Buddh Nagar Police Commissionerate, bringing an experienced officer with previous Noida experience into a senior role overseeing law and order in one of Uttar Pradesh’s fastest-growing urban and industrial regions.

The Uttar Pradesh government issued the transfer order on Tuesday, moving Sharma from the Kanpur Nagar Police Commissionerate to Gautam Buddh Nagar. He succeeds Rajiv Narayan Mishra, who has retired, according to a report by Navbharat Times – Noida.

Sharma belongs to the 2012 batch of the Uttar Pradesh cadre of the Indian Police Service. His first posting after joining the service was in Meerut, after which he served in Lucknow, Noida, Azamgarh, Basti and Lakhimpur Kheri. In February 2026, he was transferred from Mirzapur to the Kanpur Nagar Police Commissionerate, where he was appointed Joint Police Commissioner.

His responsibilities in Noida will include maintaining law and order, controlling crime, responding to cybercrime, managing traffic-related challenges and strengthening security in the city’s industrial areas. Gautam Buddh Nagar combines large residential developments, major employment clusters, industrial activity and international connectivity, giving the police commissionerate a wide operational mandate across densely populated and rapidly changing urban spaces.

The report said Sharma has received three commendation letters from the Uttar Pradesh Director General of Police during his previous service. These include a silver commendation dated 26 January 2020, a gold commendation dated 15 August 2022 and a platinum commendation dated 15 August 2024. He is also described as having training and experience relevant to technology-led policing and large urban commissionerates.

Sharma has previously served in Noida as a Deputy Commissioner of Police in 2020. That earlier posting gives him familiarity with Gautam Buddh Nagar’s geography, policing requirements and local administrative environment. His return comes as the city continues to expand through new housing, industrial investment, commercial development and regional connectivity.

Born on 11 July 1986, Sharma is originally from Jaipur, Rajasthan. He studied at IIT Roorkee, where he completed a BTech in Chemical Engineering and an MTech in Hydrocarbon Engineering. The report said he cleared the Union Public Service Commission examination after two unsuccessful attempts.

Sharma’s wife, Shalini Agnihotri, is an IPS officer of the Himachal Pradesh cadre. The two reportedly met during IPS training and later married while continuing to serve in their respective state cadres. The immediate administrative priority in Noida will now be Sharma’s transition into the Joint Police Commissioner’s role and the management of the commissionerate’s law-and-order responsibilities.
