FDA Suspends Industrial Canteen Licence After Hygiene Failures

The Ahilyanagar Food and Drugs Administration has suspended the industrial canteen licence of a facility employing more than 2,000 workers after inspectors found continued violations involving hygiene and food safety. The action followed a second inspection in which officials found that the caterer had not acted on instructions issued during an earlier visit.

Food inspectors conducted a routine inspection at the industrial unit about a fortnight before the licence was suspended and identified several violations of the Food Safety and Standards Act, according to officials cited by the Times of India. The canteen operator and unit officials were instructed to address the problems immediately and improve the safety of food served to employees.

The inspection also raised concerns about hygiene on the canteen premises and the quality of vegetables and other materials being used to prepare meals. FDA officials said the failure to comply with their instructions posed a health hazard because of the large number of employees dependent on the canteen.

A second inspection was conducted a few days before the action by food inspectors under the guidance of assistant commissioner Gaurav Jagtap. Officials found that no steps had been taken by the canteen operator to improve services or resolve the violations identified earlier. The caterer was subsequently notified and the licence issued by the FDA was suspended.

The case places the responsibility for workplace food safety within a wider regulatory framework that covers not only restaurants and retail food outlets but also canteens serving large industrial workforces. In facilities with thousands of employees, a canteen is a critical daily service, and failures in food handling, ingredient quality or hygiene can affect a substantial workforce at the same time.

The action comes amid increased inspection activity by Maharashtra’s Food and Drugs Administration. Since Tukaram Mundhe took charge as FDA commissioner, officials have reported a large number of inspections at establishments across the state. In Nashik and the surrounding region, inspections of food outlets and canteens have also increased under the guidance of FDA joint commissioner Mangesh Mane.

The available report does not identify the industrial unit, the caterer, the specific provisions allegedly breached or the duration of the licence suspension. It also does not state whether any employees reported illness or whether the canteen has been allowed to resume operations under revised conditions. The immediate regulatory step confirmed in the report is the suspension of the caterer’s FDA licence after the operator failed to implement corrective instructions.

The next stage will depend on compliance by the caterer and the outcome of any further action by the Ahilyanagar FDA. The authority’s inspections are intended to establish whether the canteen has addressed the violations and can meet food-safety requirements before any licence-related decision is reconsidered.
