Diwali Special Trains Add Relief for Chennai–South Tamil Nadu Travel

Southern Railway has announced four Diwali special trains between Chennai and destinations in southern Tamil Nadu to manage the seasonal passenger rush, with reservations scheduled to open at 8 am on November 3, according to Dinamalar.

The special services will connect Chennai Egmore, Tambaram, Kanyakumari, Tenkasi and Sengottai during the festival travel period. The announcement is aimed at passengers travelling to their hometowns for Diwali and at reducing congestion on regular services.

The first train is scheduled to run from Chennai Egmore to Kanyakumari on November 5. A second special service will operate from Tambaram to Tenkasi on November 7.

Two return services are planned for November 9. One will run from Sengottai to Tambaram, while the other will operate from Kanyakumari to Chennai Egmore. The source report did not provide train numbers, departure times, stopping patterns, coach composition or fares.

The services are being introduced during one of the busiest annual travel periods on the Chennai–southern Tamil Nadu corridor, when large numbers of passengers leave the city for family visits and return after the festival. The additional trains are intended to provide more booking capacity alongside regular railway operations.

Southern Railway has said that reservations for the announced special trains will begin at 8 am on November 3. Passengers will need to check the railway reservation system for service-specific schedules, availability, fares and boarding details before planning their journeys.
