The Bengaluru–Mumbai Vande Bharat Sleeper Express began service on November 1, introducing a new overnight rail connection between two of India’s major metropolitan regions with a reported journey time of about 16 hours.
The train has been described as a higher-comfort long-distance service, with facilities intended to improve the experience of passengers travelling between Bengaluru and Mumbai. Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the service would provide a modern travel experience and bring a major change to the rail connectivity sector, according to Prajavani.
The train comprises 16 air-conditioned coaches and can carry 823 passengers. It has the capability to operate at a maximum speed of 180 kmph, although the reported journey time between Bengaluru and Mumbai is approximately 16 hours. The fare varies according to the boarding and destination stations.
Reported fares are ₹2,810 for 3-AC, ₹3,630 for 2-AC and ₹4,450 for first-class AC. These amounts are subject to station-wise variation, according to the source report.
The first-class AC coaches include shower-bath facilities, vanity mirrors, smart-glass technology and separate seating arrangements for couples. Passengers can also call an attendant through a dedicated button. Large glass windows are intended to provide wider views, while smart-glass panels can be adjusted at the press of a button.
Other reported passenger facilities include reading lamps, coat hangers, laptop charging points, USB and Type-C ports, food trays and bottle holders. The coaches are also equipped with sensor-based vacuum bio-toilets described as being similar to those used in aircraft.
The train includes provisions for different passenger needs. A separate cage facility has been provided for passengers travelling with pets. Dedicated seats and separate toilets are available for passengers with disabilities. CCTV cameras and fire-safety equipment have been installed in each coach, according to the report.
The launch adds a new premium sleeper option to a long-distance corridor linking Bengaluru and Mumbai, two cities with substantial business, employment and passenger movement. The service’s practical value for travellers will depend on its operating schedule, station-wise fares, availability and how consistently the reported journey time is maintained.
The service began operations on November 1. Further passenger information, including station-specific fares and booking availability, is expected to be accessed through the railway reservation system.
