Ahmedabad’s Solid Waste Management Department has sealed 20 commercial units, including the Honest restaurant at Commerce Six Roads, as part of a citywide action against littering on roads and the use of prohibited plastic. The western zone also issued notices to 153 units and recovered Rs 2.67 lakh in fines during inspections across several areas.
The enforcement followed directions from the municipal commissioner to all seven solid waste management zones to conduct daily checks in different parts of the city and take action against establishments violating cleanliness rules or using prohibited plastic. The instructions are aimed at maintaining urban cleanliness and curbing the use of banned plastic products.
The western zone conducted inspections at 239 commercial units in Navrangpura, Naranpura, Vasna, Vadaj, Ranip, Sabarmati and Paldi. Notices were issued to 153 units for violations linked to unclean premises or prohibited plastic, while fines totalling Rs 2.67 lakh were collected. Twenty units were sealed during the action, including the Honest outlet located at Commerce Six Roads.
The report said enforcement has varied across Ahmedabad’s seven zones. While the western and north-western zones have been conducting daily checks in different wards and taking penalty action, some other zones have carried out limited inspections and collected relatively small fines. The municipal commissioner has repeatedly expressed dissatisfaction with the performance of these zones, according to the report.
The action also extended to pan masala stalls and shops. Solid waste teams from all seven zones inspected 1,355 such establishments, seized 35 kilograms of plastic and recovered Rs 1.15 lakh in fines. The inspections form part of the municipal administration’s broader enforcement effort against plastic use and practices that contribute to roadside waste.
The municipal commissioner’s instructions place responsibility for routine enforcement on the solid waste departments operating across the seven zones. The latest figures show that the city’s response combines notices and financial penalties with the sealing of commercial units, while the intensity of action continues to differ between zones. Further daily inspections are expected to continue in different wards under the commissioner’s direction.
