Ahmedabad’s Solid Waste Management Department has sealed 20 commercial units, including the Honest restaurant at Commerce Six Roads, as part of a crackdown on roadside littering and the use of prohibited plastic. The western zone also issued notices to 153 establishments and collected Rs 2.67 lakh in fines during inspections across seven areas.
The enforcement followed directions from the municipal commissioner to intensify daily checks against units that dump waste on roads or use banned plastic. The commissioner has instructed solid waste teams in all seven municipal zones to inspect different areas every day and take action against violations.
According to the report, the western zone team inspected 239 commercial units in Navrangpura, Naranpura, Vasna, Vadaj, Ranip, Sabarmati and Paldi. The inspections resulted in notices to 153 units for cleanliness-related violations and the use of prohibited plastic. The department also sealed 20 establishments, with Honest at Commerce Six Roads among those named in the action.
The enforcement figures point to two different levels of municipal activity. The western and north-western zones were reported to be carrying out daily checks and imposing penalties across different wards. The report also said that some other zones had undertaken limited action and collected relatively small fines, prompting repeated dissatisfaction from the municipal commissioner.
Separately, solid waste teams from all seven zones inspected 1,355 pan masala stalls and shops. The checks led to the seizure of 35 kilograms of plastic and the collection of Rs 1.15 lakh in fines. The figures indicate that the city’s enforcement drive is targeting both commercial waste practices and the circulation or use of prohibited plastic at street-level businesses.
The municipal action places commercial establishments under continuing scrutiny for practices that can worsen litter on public roads and complicate routine waste management. Notices, fines and sealing are being used as separate enforcement measures, depending on the violations identified during inspections.
The commissioner’s direction requires the seven zonal solid waste departments to maintain daily checking across different parts of Ahmedabad. Further action will depend on inspections by the respective zonal teams and on compliance by establishments that have received notices or faced penalties.
