Delhi Rally Triggers Heavy Security and Traffic Curbs Around Ramlila Maidan

The INDIA bloc’s ‘Vote Bachao, Desh Bachao’ rally at Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan on Sunday led to extensive security and traffic arrangements, with more than 4,000 police personnel deployed, over 200 CCTV cameras installed and the venue divided into 14 security zones.

The rally, scheduled from 10am to 5pm, was organised around opposition concerns over alleged irregularities in the special intensive revision of electoral rolls, as well as the protection of democracy and the Constitution. Leaders from several INDIA bloc parties addressed the gathering, including Rashtriya Janata Dal leader Tejashwi Yadav, Congress leaders Salman Khurshid, Sachin Pilot and Bhupinder Singh Hooda, Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar) MP Supriya Sule and Samajwadi Party MP Iqra Hasan.

The event created a substantial movement-management challenge in central Delhi as supporters travelled towards the ground by buses, private vehicles and on foot. The report said traffic was affected on roads around the venue, while the ground had space for approximately 40,000 to 50,000 seated attendees. By noon, parts of the ground were occupied, although some areas could not be used because of waterlogging and several chairs remained vacant.

Delhi Police imposed restrictions on the movement of heavy vehicles around Ramlila Maidan. Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Vijayant Goel Arya said routes towards New Delhi Railway Station and nearby hospitals would remain open for emergency vehicles. Around 150 additional traffic police personnel were deployed to manage vehicle movement and reduce disruption.

The security plan included drone surveillance, body-worn cameras, anti-riot vehicles and a dedicated control room. Police personnel from different districts and Central Armed Police Forces were deployed along the route from Minto Bridge to the venue and inside the ground. Each of the 14 zones was placed under the supervision of an Assistant Commissioner of Police-rank officer, while two zones were assigned to Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police-rank officers.

Police Commissioner-level officials inspected arrangements at Minto Bridge and Ramlila Maidan on Saturday. Authorities also said access for ambulances to Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Hospital and G.B. Pant Hospital would be maintained. The deployment of 270 Central Armed Police Forces companies in Delhi has been extended until November 16, according to the report.

At the rally, Tejashwi Yadav alleged that votes were being ‘stolen’ and said opposition parties had united to protect democracy and the Constitution. Salman Khurshid questioned the removal of citizens’ names from electoral rolls, while Sachin Pilot alleged that pressure was being used to silence opposition voices. The leaders’ claims were made during the political event and were not independently established in the supplied report.

The rally’s immediate civic impact is centred on road access, crowd movement and the protection of emergency routes in one of the capital’s busiest central districts. Delhi Police’s traffic and security arrangements are expected to remain relevant through the scheduled end of the event at 5pm.
