Hyderabad Drunk Driving Crackdown Books 205 Motorists in Weekend Drive

Cyberabad Traffic Police booked 205 motorists for drunk driving during a special weekend enforcement drive across the Cyberabad Police Commissionerate, with 11 recording blood alcohol levels between 301 mg/100 ml and 550 mg/100 ml.

The offenders included 177 two-wheeler riders, eight auto-rickshaw drivers and 20 car drivers, according to Cyberabad Traffic ADCP (Administration) G. Narender. No heavy vehicle drivers were booked during the operation.

Police data showed that 174 motorists recorded Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) levels ranging from 36 mg/100 ml to 200 mg/100 ml. Another 20 motorists registered levels between 201 mg/100 ml and 300 mg/100 ml, while the remaining 11 were found in the highest reported range of 301 mg/100 ml to 550 mg/100 ml.

All those booked will be produced before the court for legal proceedings, the traffic police said. The vehicle breakdown highlights the exposure of two-wheeler riders and other smaller road users to impaired driving on the city’s busy urban road network, although the police statement did not provide details of crashes or injuries linked to the cases.

The enforcement drive comes alongside court action in earlier drunk-driving cases. Courts disposed of 289 such cases between October 26 and 31, according to traffic police officials. Of these, 26 motorists were sentenced to imprisonment and fines, two were ordered to pay fines and undertake social service, and 261 were fined.

The police reiterated that driving under the influence of alcohol is a serious offence. They also warned that motorists who cause fatal accidents while driving in an inebriated condition could face charges under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, which deals with culpable homicide not amounting to murder. The provision carries a maximum punishment of 10 years’ imprisonment along with a fine.

The cases will now proceed through the courts, while the police said motorists booked in the latest weekend operation would be presented for legal proceedings.
