Chennai Monsoon Preparedness Gets Urgent Push in Villivakkam

Chennai monsoon preparedness measures have been intensified in Villivakkam, with officials directed to ready pumps, vehicles and other equipment before heavy rain expected between November 15 and December 10. The instructions focus on low-lying areas that experienced waterlogging during earlier spells of rain, as well as risks linked to electricity infrastructure, trees and delayed civic works.

At a review meeting held on Saturday at Thanthai Periyar Community Hall in Thirumangalam, minister for public works and sports development Aadhav Arjuna asked departments to ensure that water is cleared promptly from vulnerable locations. Officials were told to keep pumping equipment and vehicles ready so that response operations could begin without delay during periods of intense rainfall.

The review also addressed the risk of electrocution in waterlogged areas. Officials were instructed to raise low-lying electrical distribution boxes, relocate damaged boxes and lay cables underground wherever necessary. The directions were issued alongside a request to remove branches from trees that could pose a danger and to clear fallen trees quickly after an incident.

Tree-cutting equipment was handed over to workers after the meeting. Telescopic tree-pruning machines were also provided to cut branches identified as hazardous. The measures are intended to support faster clearance of roads and public areas when trees or branches fall during heavy rain.

The minister separately directed officials to accelerate ongoing development works and act on petitions submitted by residents. Each department was asked to designate an officer responsible for monitoring and resolving public grievances, creating a department-level point of contact for complaints during the preparedness period.

The review identified a separate problem affecting residents of Tamil Nadu Urban Habitat Development Board tenements. Some residents had not received allotment orders, which was preventing them from accessing services and benefits including ration cards. Officials were instructed to resolve the allotment issue without delay and to ensure that preparedness measures covered both Urban Habitat Development Board and Housing Board colonies.

Applications for ration cards were also to be processed promptly, according to the directions issued at the meeting. This links the monsoon review to a broader administrative issue in which delays in housing documentation can restrict residents’ access to essential public services.

Greater Chennai Corporation Commissioner Dr G.S. Sameeran, Chennai Collector S. Malathi Helen and senior officials from the Corporation, water resources department, highways department, Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board, Tangedco, police and Chennai Metro Rail attended the meeting. The participating agencies were asked to keep their equipment, field teams and grievance mechanisms ready as the forecast rain period approaches.
