Mizoram Deploys Four Battalions as Operation Jericho-2 Targets Drug Routes

Mizoram Police will deploy four battalions from Monday for Operation Jericho-2, renewing the state’s anti-drug campaign with intensified border surveillance, intelligence gathering and coordinated action against trafficking networks ahead of the festive season.

The deployment will draw personnel from the 1st Battalion of the Mizoram Armed Police, 3rd Battalion of the Mizoram Armed Police, 1st India Reserve Battalion and 5th India Reserve Battalion. District superintendents of police will supervise the campaign in coordination with civil society organisations and other stakeholders.

Border districts will receive particular attention because of their vulnerability to drug smuggling and their strategic role in preventing narcotics from entering and moving through Mizoram. Police said the renewed operation would combine intelligence-led enforcement, closer coordination among agencies, stronger vigilance along vulnerable routes and participation from local communities.

Operation Jericho was launched on September 1, 2025, as a joint initiative of the Mizoram Police, the Excise and Narcotics Department and the Central Young Mizo Association. Its first phase focused on 22 villages along the Myanmar border in Champhai district, where specially deployed police personnel worked with district police, village defence parties, local YMA units and other civil society groups.

The dedicated deployment in those 22 villages was withdrawn on March 31, 2026. By then, police said the operation had led to seizures of narcotic substances valued at approximately Rs 391.95 crore. A total of 203 cases had been registered and 298 people arrested during that phase.

The withdrawal of the special deployment did not end the operation. District superintendents of police continued enforcement activity using existing forces, maintaining action against drug-trafficking networks in the border areas. According to police figures, the cumulative results of Operation Jericho up to October 26, 2026, included 447 cases, 663 arrests and the seizure of narcotic drugs valued at Rs 843.47 crore.

Operation Jericho-2 will now add four police battalions to the campaign as the state prepares for the festive season. The deployment is intended to reinforce surveillance and intelligence operations rather than replace the existing district-level enforcement structure.

Police have also called for continued public cooperation. Branches of the Young Mizo Association, village defence parties and other civil society organisations have been asked to remain involved and share information with authorities. Residents have been urged to report information about drug trafficking, peddling and other drug-related activity promptly to the appropriate authorities.

The renewed campaign will be supervised by district police leadership, with border areas and vulnerable movement routes receiving enhanced attention from Monday.
