Gurugram Police have alleged that a local Congress leader fabricated death and extortion threats, using a contact in the United States to obtain police protection and establish influence. The police are preparing to cancel the original case and register a fresh case over alleged deception of the police and misuse of government resources.
The leader, Dharmendra Makdola, district president of the Rajiv Gandhi Panchayati Raj Organisation in Congress, had filed a complaint at the Sector 5 police station on September 23. A resident of Sector 5, Makdola alleged that he was receiving repeated extortion calls from US numbers in the name of gangster Himanshu Bhau.
According to the complaint, the callers demanded Rs 5 crore or a 40% share in land. They allegedly threatened to shoot him and blow up his house with grenades if the demands were not met. Makdola told the police that he suspected his business partners were behind the threats.
Because of the nature of the allegations, Gurugram Police registered a case and provided him with security. The case then came under scrutiny by the police cyber and technical teams, which examined call-detail records and the internet protocol addresses linked to the foreign numbers.
The investigation reportedly found that the person making the calls from the United States was the son of one of Makdola’s close acquaintances. Police alleged that the conspiracy had been planned at Makdola’s direction and that he had written and sent the caller a note containing the script for the threatening calls.
A handwriting examination arranged by the police reportedly matched the writing on the note with Makdola’s handwriting. The police also cited witness statements and the technical investigation as evidence supporting their conclusion that the threat had been staged.
The case highlights how a security complaint can trigger the deployment of public policing resources before investigators establish whether the threat is genuine. In this instance, the alleged use of foreign phone numbers and the name of a known gangster led to a police response that included protection for the complainant.
A police officer told the source that, after the findings emerged, the process of cancelling the original first information report had begun. The officer said action was being prepared against Makdola, including his arrest, on allegations of misleading the police and using government security for personal purposes.
Attempts to contact Makdola for his response were unsuccessful. He did not answer calls or respond to messages, according to the report. The next step is the police action on the original case and the proposed fresh case based on the investigation findings.
