Bengaluru hotel pool deaths involving two foreign nationals have prompted a police investigation after the men were allegedly electrocuted at the Conrad Hotel in Ulsoor on the evening of October 30. Two other people were injured while trying to rescue them, according to the police.
The deceased were identified as Alexander Maximilian Theiss, 57, a German national and Lufthansa Airlines crew member, and Juraj Horvat, 45, a Slovak national who worked as a project manager with an IT company. Both were at the hotel’s swimming pool on the third floor when the incident occurred.
Police said the two injured people were Mathew Desantis, 41, an American tourist staying at the hotel, and Rahul Tiwari, 28, a pool attendant and lifeguard employed by the Conrad Hotel. They were taken to a private hospital for treatment and were reported to be out of danger.
The incident has raised immediate questions about electrical safety in a pool area, including how the swimming pool or its surrounding facilities came to be electrically charged. Police have registered a case and begun an investigation to establish the circumstances that led to the suspected electrocution.
The case involves both a public safety incident and the operation of a built facility where electrical systems, water infrastructure and emergency response procedures intersect. The police investigation is expected to examine the pool area, electrical installations and the sequence of events during the attempted rescue. The supplied police account does not identify the source of the electrical current or indicate whether any equipment failure, wiring fault or safety breach has been established.
The deaths also highlight the risks faced by hotel guests and staff when an electrical hazard develops near water. The presence of a pool attendant and lifeguard, who was among those injured during the rescue attempt, is part of the circumstances being examined by investigators. No conclusion about responsibility has been reported at this stage.
Police have not announced further details about the investigation, including whether the hotel’s electrical and pool systems have been inspected or whether any additional safety measures have been ordered. The investigation will determine how the pool area became electrically charged and what led to the deaths and injuries.
