A Bengaluru dating app scam allegedly ended with two people threatening a man with a knife and fleeing with 226 grams of gold jewellery valued at about ₹20 lakh from a house in Nagarabhavi, police said. Two accused, identified as Nazia and Syed Mousin, have been arrested in connection with the case, according to a report by Vijay Karnataka.
The case was registered at the Chandra Layout police station on the basis of a complaint filed by the house owner, identified in the report as Ramesh. The names of the complainant and the man who was present during the incident have been changed in the report.
According to the police account cited by the publication, Ramesh lived with his family in a rented house in Nagarabhavi. On October 22, his family members travelled to their native place near Nelamangala for work-related reasons. Ramesh then gave the house keys to his friend Harshavardhan, who said he would stay there for a day.
Harshavardhan allegedly used the Grindr dating app to contact a woman after deciding to spend private time at the house, police told Vijay Karnataka. At around 10.15 pm, a person wearing a face covering arrived near the house. Harshavardhan allowed the visitor inside, but later realised that the person was not the woman he had expected, according to the report.
Police said the first visitor then called another person known to them to the house. The two allegedly threatened Harshavardhan with a knife and took gold jewellery kept in a cupboard. The jewellery was reported to weigh 226 grams and have an estimated value of approximately ₹20 lakh.
Harshavardhan later informed Ramesh about the incident. Ramesh then approached the Chandra Layout police station and filed a complaint. The case involves an alleged robbery at a private residence, with the initial contact made through a dating application, rather than a crime occurring in a public transport or commercial space.
Investigators examined closed-circuit television footage from the area around the house and information recorded on the dating app, according to the report. These leads allegedly helped police identify and arrest Nazia and Syed Mousin. Police have recovered a portion of the jewellery from the accused, Vijay Karnataka reported.
The report said police suspect that the accused may have been involved in similar offences in other locations. That possibility has not been established as a confirmed finding, and further investigation is under way. The police investigation will determine the sequence of events, the full value and recovery status of the jewellery, and whether the accused are linked to any other cases.
