Khammam Commissioner Helps Migrant Family Access Jobs, Anganwadi Care

Khammam Municipal Commissioner Abhishek Augustya has intervened to support a migrant family from Madhya Pradesh, arranging livelihood assistance for the parents and enrolling their children at an Anganwadi centre in the city.

The commissioner acted after receiving an anonymous message about the family’s situation. He deputed a team from the Mission for Elimination of Poverty in Municipal Areas (MEPMA) to assess the family’s needs and provide assistance, according to a report by Deccan Chronicle.

During an interaction with the family, Augustya spoke to the migrant woman about enrolling her children at the Ballepalli Anganwadi Centre in Khammam. The commissioner explained that the centre would provide the children with care, nutrition and educational support while their parents continued to work.

The woman had expressed concern that she and her family needed to go to work, according to the report. In response, the commissioner assured her that the children could attend the Anganwadi centre while the parents pursued their livelihoods. Uniforms were also distributed to the children.

The intervention links two immediate needs faced by the family: access to income and access to basic services for children. The migrant workers were provided with employment opportunities intended to help them earn a livelihood. Their children were subsequently enrolled at the Ballepalli centre.

The children are expected to receive learning facilities, uniforms and nutritious food at the Anganwadi centre. The facility also has essential infrastructure, including television and internet facilities, according to the report.

The episode highlights the role of municipal administration in identifying and responding to the needs of families who may not be connected to formal support systems. In this case, the initial information reached the commissioner through an anonymous message, after which the municipal machinery was used to assess the situation and coordinate assistance through MEPMA and the Anganwadi centre.

For migrant families, access to urban services can depend on whether local institutions identify their needs and help them navigate available facilities. The Khammam intervention brought livelihood support and early-childhood services into a single response, rather than addressing the family’s employment and childcare concerns separately.

The immediate administrative steps reported in the case were the deputation of the MEPMA team, the commissioner’s interaction with the family, the provision of uniforms, employment assistance for the parents and enrolment of the children at Ballepalli Anganwadi Centre. The children’s access to the centre’s learning, nutrition and support facilities will form the next stage of the intervention.
