Maharashtra FDA Seizes ₹4.45 Crore Food Stock, Suspends Licences

The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has seized food stock worth more than ₹4.45 crore and suspended or ordered the suspension of licences at facilities linked to Blinkit, Reliance Retail, Zomato Hyperpure and other food businesses in Thane, Navi Mumbai and Pune. The action followed a special campaign targeting the alleged re-entry of expired, spoiled and rejected food products into the market.

According to the report by Navbharat Times – Mumbai, the FDA conducted inspections of warehouses, distribution centres and cold-storage facilities during a campaign launched in October 2026. The department said the exercise was intended to identify food products that were being sold again in the name of disposal.

The largest seizure took place at M/s Savla Foods and Cold Storage Private Limited in Turbhe, Navi Mumbai. FDA officials seized 91,353 kilograms of food material from the premises. The stock was estimated to be worth more than ₹4.12 crore, after which the company’s licence was suspended with immediate effect.

In the Bhiwandi area, officials seized stock valued at ₹32.71 lakh from the premises of M/s Blink Commerce Private Limited in Pagao. The company’s licence was suspended and an FIR was registered at Bhiwandi taluka police station. A further seizure, involving stock worth ₹6.88 lakh, was reported at M/s Cloudstore Retail Private Limited in Padgha village. Its licence was also suspended and an FIR was filed at Padgha police station.

The FDA also suspended the licences of Reliance Consumer Products and Reliance Retail at Wadpe in Bhiwandi. The licence of Zomato Hyperpure at Usatane in Ambernath had been suspended on October 15, 2026, according to the report.

In Pune district, the department issued licence-suspension orders against Reliance Retail Limited in Chakan and Blinkit Commerce Private Limited in Nighoje. The source report said that six establishments had their licences suspended immediately, while suspension orders were issued against two other establishments. Two cases have resulted in FIRs.

The action places food-storage and last-mile distribution systems under scrutiny, particularly at a time when retail networks depend on multiple warehouses, cold-storage facilities and rapid delivery centres. The FDA’s intervention covers not only storefronts but also the facilities where products are stored, segregated and removed from circulation.

The department said further action would continue against establishments found violating food-safety standards. Its stated objective is to ensure that only safe and quality food products reach consumers. The report did not provide details of any court proceedings, penalties beyond the licence actions or the final disposal process for the seized stock.
