Shirur Nagar Parishad Ousts Vice-President as BJP-NCP Bloc Gains Ground

Shirur Nagar Parishad vice-president Mitesh Pradeep Gadiya was removed from office on October 30 after a no-confidence motion against him was passed by 20 votes, marking a significant shift in the council’s governing alignment.

The motion had been filed by 18 corporators, who cited dissatisfaction with Gadiya’s functioning. It was discussed at a meeting held in the Rasiklal Dhariwal Hall under the chairpersonship of municipal president Aishwarya Pacharne. Gadiya rejected the allegations and walked out of the meeting, followed by five other corporators from the Nationalist Congress Party–Sharadchandra Pawar faction.

The vote was subsequently conducted by a show of hands. Twenty corporators, including 11 from the Bharatiya Janata Party, eight from the Nationalist Congress Party and one independent member, voted in favour of the motion. Pacharne announced that the motion had been approved and that Gadiya had been removed as vice-president.

The vote follows several days of political realignment within the municipal council. In the December 2025 Shirur municipal election, the BJP won 11 seats, the Nationalist Congress Party won seven and the Nationalist Congress Party–Sharadchandra Pawar faction won five. The two Nationalist Congress factions later joined hands under the banner of the Shirur Municipal Council Group, allowing them to form the governing arrangement while the BJP remained in opposition.

That arrangement gave Gadiya, a corporator from the Sharadchandra Pawar faction, the vice-president’s post. However, disagreements between the two Nationalist Congress groups intensified in recent days. Six corporators from the Sharadchandra Pawar faction indicated that they intended to leave the alliance and submitted a letter to Pacharne, who is also the group leader and municipal president. The move weakened the earlier governing arrangement and opened the way for a new majority.

The BJP later announced unconditional support for the Nationalist Congress faction that was facing the loss of its majority. The decision followed discussions involving Shirur legislator Mauli Katke, BJP taluka president Rahul Pacharne, municipal group leader Nitin Pacharne and corporators Abhijit Pacharne, Sunil Jadhav and Sagar Narwade. The new alignment brought together the BJP’s 11 councillors with eight Nationalist Congress members and an independent councillor for the no-confidence vote.

The leadership change illustrates how municipal administrations can be reshaped by post-election alliances even when the distribution of seats remains unchanged. The immediate administrative consequence is the vacancy in the vice-president’s post. Discussions are now focused on the next appointment, with Nitin Pacharne, the BJP’s municipal group leader, being considered a likely candidate, according to the report.

The council’s next step will be to decide who succeeds Gadiya as vice-president under the newly formed political alignment.
