Central Railways’ Mumbai Division is transforming the role of ticket checkers by tasking them with an additional responsibility: promoting travel etiquette and passenger awareness. This initiative is part of the Railways’ broader effort to create a safer, cleaner, and more comfortable journey for its commuters.
To support this initiative, ticket checkers have been equipped with handheld speakers to deliver essential messages in Hindi and Marathi. These messages encourage passengers to follow basic travel norms, such as traveling with valid tickets, maintaining hygiene, and using phones considerately to avoid disturbing fellow passengers. One of the critical aspects of the campaign is raising awareness about safety measures. Ticket checkers will urge passengers not to board or deboard running trains and to accompany children when using train toilets. They will also provide useful information such as contact details for reporting issues related to air-conditioning, charging points, or coach cleanliness. Passengers will be reminded to use dustbins to dispose of waste and keep the coaches clean.
The initiative was officially launched on December 4, 2024, with handheld speakers distributed to ticket-checking staff at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT). The event was attended by senior officials, including Dharam Veer Meena, General Manager of Central Railways, and Rajnish Goyal, Divisional Railway Manager of the Mumbai Division. Speaking about the campaign, Dharam Veer Meena emphasised the importance of effective communication in enhancing passenger safety and comfort. He stated, “These handheld speakers will empower our staff to directly engage with passengers, delivering timely and crucial information for a more pleasant journey.”
Senior officials highlighted that the initiative not only focuses on etiquette but also strengthens passenger engagement, ensuring that everyone on board contributes to a more secure and enjoyable travel environment. This proactive measure demonstrates the Central Railways’ commitment to improving the quality of train travel for millions of passengers daily. By combining safety, hygiene, and etiquette education, the initiative is set to redefine the commuter experience on Mumbai’s bustling railway network.
