The Pune Municipal Corporation has cancelled the scheduled citywide water cut on Thursday, November 5, to ensure uninterrupted supply during the Diwali festival, according to the civic administration. The decision is intended to support residents as household water demand rises for cleaning, food preparation and visiting relatives.
PMC has been observing a weekly water cut every Thursday as part of measures to conserve water stored in the dams supplying Pune. The administration is using the available reservoir stock carefully while planning supply for the full year, the report said.
Under the regular schedule, the water supply is stopped across the city on Thursdays. The effects of the shutdown can continue to be felt in different parts of Pune for the following two days, according to the civic water-supply department. Cancelling the cut on November 5 will allow residents to receive water on the day of the festival period when demand is expected to be higher.
The decision comes as households prepare for Diwali, when water use typically increases because of home cleaning, preparation of festive food and the arrival of guests. The PMC administration said that maintaining the scheduled shutdown during the festival could have caused additional inconvenience and water shortages for residents.
Nandkishor Jagtap, chief engineer of the PMC water-supply department, said the corporation had decided to provide water throughout the day on November 5 in view of the increased requirement during Diwali. The announcement applies to the scheduled Thursday water cut and does not indicate that the broader water-conservation measure has been withdrawn.
The civic administration’s decision highlights the operational balance required in Pune’s water network: the city must conserve limited stored water while adjusting supply around periods of predictable demand. The PMC has linked the weekly shutdown to the water available in the dams and to the need to manage that stock over the year.
For residents, the immediate change is limited to November 5. The regular Thursday water-cut arrangement remains part of the conservation plan described by the administration. The PMC water-supply department is expected to implement the additional supply on November 5 while continuing its broader effort to manage Pune’s available water stock.
