Bengaluru Business Corridor Clears Land Acquisition Hurdle for 3 Interchanges

The Karnataka government has issued a final notification allowing the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) to acquire 71 acres and 11.8 guntas across 12 villages in Bengaluru Urban district for three cloverleaf interchanges on the Bengaluru Business Corridor.

The Urban Development Department issued the notification on October 27, declaring the land necessary for a public purpose and enabling the BDA to proceed with the acquisition process. The affected areas fall across Bengaluru North, Yelahanka, Bengaluru East and Bengaluru South taluks.

The proposed interchanges are intended to connect the business corridor with Ballari Road, Old Madras Road and Hosur Road. At Madavara, the BDA is already building a cloverleaf interchange to link the corridor with NICE Road. Land for that project will include parcels belonging to Nandi Economic Corridor Enterprises, other private owners, the Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board and the National Highways Authority of India, according to the report.

The acquisition plan also includes land for truck terminals and Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation depots. These facilities indicate that the land requirement is tied not only to grade-separated road connections but also to the movement and management of commercial and public transport vehicles along the corridor.

The notification covers land distributed across 12 villages. The affected parcels are identified in a plan available for inspection at the office of the BDA special land acquisition officer on T Chowdaiah Road in Bengaluru. The state government has appointed the officer to perform the functions of a deputy commissioner during the acquisition process.

The land acquisition marks another formal step in the development of a project that was initially sanctioned as Peripheral Ring Road Phase I in April 2007. The project received its final notification in June of the same year before being renamed the Bengaluru Business Corridor through a government order dated July 23, 2024.

The latest notification has been issued under Section 19(1) of the Bangalore Development Authority Act, 1976. That provision enables the authority to proceed with the statutory acquisition process after the government declares that the land is required for a public purpose.

The proposed links are significant because they connect the business corridor to three established radial routes serving different parts of Bengaluru. Ballari Road provides access towards north Bengaluru, Old Madras Road serves the eastern side of the city and Hosur Road connects the southeast corridor. The notification, however, does not specify construction completion dates, the compensation process or the implementation schedule for the three interchanges.

The next stage will involve the BDA’s special land acquisition officer carrying out the statutory acquisition functions for the identified parcels. Landowners and other affected parties can inspect the plan at the designated office as the process moves forward.
