Kolkata Rain Intensifies as Twin Weather Systems Bring Fresh Downpour

Kolkata is receiving rain under the combined influence of a weakened deep depression linked to Cyclone Arnab and a fresh low-pressure area over the southern Andaman Sea, with light to moderate showers forecast across the city through Thursday and more rain expected in parts of southern West Bengal.

Rain began in Kolkata and several other districts late on Wednesday night, according to the report. The city remained overcast on Thursday morning, with no sunlight and continuing rainfall. The forecast indicated that light to moderate rain could continue throughout the day.

Heavy rain was expected in some areas of Paschim Medinipur, Purba Medinipur, Jhargram, Bankura, Purulia and Paschim Bardhaman. The conditions could affect road travel and daily commuting in Kolkata and the affected districts, particularly where rainfall combines with existing drainage or traffic bottlenecks.

The report said the system associated with Cyclone Arnab had weakened into a deep depression. The cyclone’s influence had already led to a forecast of rain across districts in southern West Bengal over the following days. A separate low-pressure area has now formed over the southern Andaman Sea, creating what the report described as a combined weather influence over the region.

No heavy-rain forecast was issued for southern West Bengal from Friday, although light to moderate showers could occur in parts of Purba Bardhaman, Paschim Bardhaman, Murshidabad and Nadia. Light rain may continue in several areas on Saturday.

Northern West Bengal could also receive light to moderate rain from Thursday through Saturday. Some areas close to the hills were expected to receive heavy rain on Thursday and Friday. The report did not provide details on possible school closures, transport restrictions, rainfall totals or municipal emergency measures.

The immediate forecast period extends through Saturday, with residents and local authorities expected to monitor further weather updates as both systems influence rainfall across West Bengal.
