Pune FDA Seizes 1,329 Kg of Food Products in Safety Crackdown

The Pune division of the Food and Drug Administration seized 1,329 kg of roasted gram, almonds and black raisins worth ₹6.58 lakh from three establishments during inspections carried out over food quality and safety concerns. Officials said the products appeared to have labelling deficiencies and may not comply with prescribed quality standards.

The seized stock included 478 kg of roasted gram valued at ₹53,775 from M/s Ricky Traders, 358 kg of almonds worth ₹3.58 lakh from M/s S S Sales Corporation, and 493 kg of black raisins valued at ₹2.46 lakh from M/s Nirmal Cold Storage.

According to the FDA, the inspections were conducted by its Pune division. The department has initiated further action under food safety regulations following the seizures. The products were taken into custody while officials proceed with the regulatory process.

The action places attention on the compliance obligations of food businesses operating within Pune’s supply and storage network. Under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, and the rules framed under it, food business operators are required to maintain hygienic and safe storage conditions and comply with mandatory licensing, registration and labelling requirements.

The FDA said the suspected deficiencies related to the way the products were labelled and their possible failure to meet prescribed quality standards. The department did not state in the supplied report that the products had been conclusively found to be adulterated or unsafe for consumption. Further proceedings are expected to establish the nature of any violations under the applicable food safety rules.

The seizure also involved products stored across different types of food establishments, including a trader, a sales corporation and a cold storage facility. This highlights the role of regulatory inspections across multiple points in the food distribution chain, from commercial handling and storage to compliance with information required on packaged or processed food products.

The Pune administration has directed food business operators to follow the Food Safety and Standards Act and associated regulations. The FDA warned that establishments found selling substandard or adulterated food products, or products carrying incorrect labels, would face strict action.

The department’s further action under food safety regulations will determine the next steps in the cases involving Ricky Traders, S S Sales Corporation and Nirmal Cold Storage.
