Hyderabad Rain Alert: IMD Warns of Waterlogging and Strong Winds

The India Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert for heavy to very heavy rain in four Telangana districts after a cyclonic storm crossed the Andhra Pradesh and Yanam coasts, while Hyderabad experienced cooler weather, cloudy skies and light rain conditions on Wednesday. The warning carries risks of waterlogging, traffic disruption, reduced visibility and damage to vulnerable structures in affected areas.

The orange alert covers Bhadradri Kothagudem, Khammam, Nalgonda and Suryapet, where heavy to very heavy rain is expected at isolated places. The IMD also issued a yellow alert for heavy rain in Jayashankar Bhupalpally, Mulugu, Mahabubabad, Warangal and Hanumakonda districts.

Thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds of 50-60 kmph, potentially reaching 70 kmph, were forecast in parts of the nine districts. In Hyderabad, the IMD forecast generally cloudy skies, with light rain or thundershowers and gusty winds of 30-40 kmph over the following 24 hours.

The city recorded a maximum temperature of 32.2°C and a minimum of 22.6°C on Wednesday, according to the IMD’s 2 pm bulletin. The maximum and minimum temperatures were expected to remain around 30°C and 23°C respectively over the next 24 hours.

A scientist from the Telangana Development Planning Society said the cyclone’s cloud cover had reduced incoming solar radiation, bringing daytime temperatures down to between 28°C and 32°C across Telangana. The cooler conditions were expected to continue until Thursday, after which temperatures were forecast to return to normal levels of 32°C to 35°C across the state and 30°C to 32°C in the Core Urban Region.

The storm crossed the Andhra Pradesh and Yanam coasts between Bapatla and Visakhapatnam early on Wednesday, with landfall completed by 8 am. It carried sustained winds of 125-135 kmph, with gusts reaching 150 kmph, and was expected to weaken gradually as it moved northwestwards.

The IMD warned that rain-hit areas could face waterlogging, traffic disruptions and reduced visibility. It also cautioned of possible damage to crops and vulnerable structures. Residents were advised to avoid waterlogged areas, check traffic updates and stay away from unsafe structures. The weather scientist said winter conditions in Telangana usually begin around the second week of November.
