Ahmedabad Water Crisis: AMC Plans 12 Deep Borewells Across Four Zones

The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) is seeking approval to construct 12 deep borewells across four zones as a contingency measure against a possible water shortage in the city. The proposal, estimated to cost Rs 3.99 crore, has been placed before the civic body’s Water Supply and Sewerage Committee for consideration.

According to a report by Gujarat Samachar – Ahmedabad, the planned borewells will be drilled to a depth of 310 metres, or about 1,000 feet. They are proposed for the west, central, north-west and south-west zones, with locations to be selected in areas identified as having a specific requirement for additional water infrastructure.

The proposal seeks permission to assign the work to four separate agencies. Each borewell is estimated to cost Rs 33.30 lakh. The quoted amount includes drilling, well development, pipe assembly and the required materials, according to the report.

The planned intervention indicates that the AMC is preparing additional groundwater extraction capacity even as civic officials have reportedly maintained that the city’s water situation is under control. The proposal itself is described as a precautionary response to the possibility of a water crisis rather than a confirmation that a citywide supply failure has already occurred.

The four zones named in the proposal cover a wide portion of Ahmedabad’s developed urban area. However, the supplied report does not identify the individual neighbourhoods or plots where the borewells will be constructed. Those locations are expected to be determined on the basis of local need and administrative approval.

The proposal also has a financial and procedural dimension. The Water Supply and Sewerage Committee must consider the Rs 3.99-crore request before the work can proceed under the proposed arrangement. Since the proposal was still awaiting approval at the time of reporting, the construction start date, completion schedule and operational use of the borewells had not been announced.

The AMC is expected to take up similar borewell works in the city’s other three zones in the coming days, according to the report. The supplied information does not specify which three zones are involved or whether those projects have already been formally prepared.

The proposed depth and cost show the scale of the civic response under consideration, but they do not establish how much additional water the 12 borewells would provide or how the extracted water would be integrated into the existing municipal network. Those details, along with the final locations and implementation timeline, will depend on the committee’s decision and subsequent municipal action.
