Flooded Anakapalli Causeways Shut as Police Block Fatal Crossings

Police have stopped all movement across the Vaddadi and Vijayarama Raju Peta causeways in Anakapalli district’s Buchaiahpet mandal after floodwater rose to dangerous levels following heavy rain caused by Cyclone Arnab.

The restriction covers pedestrians and every category of vehicle, including two-wheelers, autorickshaws, buses and lorries, the Anakapalli district police said in an emergency warning issued on the instructions of Superintendent of Police Tuhin Sinha.

The two causeways are currently carrying flowing water, making crossings unsafe for both residents and motorists. Police have also warned cattle owners not to attempt moving animals across the flooded routes, cautioning that such efforts could place human and animal lives at risk.

Residents of Buchaiahpet, V. Madugula, Chodavaram and Cheedikada mandals have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel and remain indoors unless movement is required for an emergency. The warning asks people not to underestimate the force of the water or attempt to cross routes covered by floodwater.

The restrictions affect local connectivity through causeways that can become hazardous when heavy rainfall causes water to flow over their decks. Unlike elevated bridges, causeways are designed to allow water to pass across or beneath the road structure, but safe use depends on water levels and flow conditions. When water rises over the crossing, vehicles and pedestrians can lose stability or be swept away.

Police personnel have been deployed at both causeways to prevent people from entering the restricted stretches and to reduce the risk of accidents. The deployment also places enforcement staff at the points where residents may otherwise attempt to judge the depth or speed of the water themselves.

The police said the restrictions would remain in force until weather conditions improve and the floodwater recedes. Residents have been asked to cooperate with the instructions and avoid unnecessary journeys while the routes remain flooded.

People requiring emergency assistance can call 112 or contact their local police station, the Anakapalli district police said.
