The Pune Regional Transport Office has warned private bus operators against charging fares above government-prescribed limits during the Diwali period and announced action under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, and relevant rules against violators.
Regional Transport Officer Archana Gaikwad issued the warning as passenger numbers rise during the festive season, when complaints of private bus operators charging excessive fares are common. The RTO has also opened a WhatsApp channel for passengers to report overcharging and other violations.
The transport authority held a meeting with representatives of private bus operators to discuss fare compliance, passenger safety and measures to prevent travellers from being overcharged. Deputy Regional Transport Officer Swapnil Bhosale, probationary Assistant Regional Transport Officers Rahul Fasale and Rohit Arsul, and 26 representatives of the bus operators’ association attended the meeting.
The RTO said private bus operators must charge fares within the limits prescribed under the government resolution dated April 20, 2018. It will maintain a special watch over operators during the festive period and take action against those found violating the applicable norms.
The directions also cover road safety. Bus operators have been told to ensure that drivers do not drive under the influence of alcohol or use mobile phones while driving. They have additionally been instructed to ensure compliance with road safety rules, prioritise passenger safety and keep all mandatory vehicle documents valid.
Passengers who are charged excess fares or notice other violations can submit complaints to the RTO through WhatsApp at 8275330209. The authority has asked complainants to include their name, mobile number, a photograph of the ticket and details of the complaint. The RTO’s monitoring and enforcement measures will remain in place during the Diwali travel period.
