In a significant flood mitigation initiative, the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has unveiled plans to redirect the TVS canal, a critical precursor to Otteri Nullah, towards the Padikuppam canal. The TVS canal spans two kilometres, passing through Ambattur Industrial Estate, Kumarasamy Nagar, and Anna Nagar West, before joining Otteri Nullah near the railway station. This strategic diversion aims to reduce flooding risks, addressing long-standing concerns from Anna Nagar residents.
Recent dredging operations have been a crucial part of these efforts, with GCC collaborating with IIT Madras for bathymetric studies to enhance scientific dredging practices. Over 1,250 metric tonnes of silt have been removed from Otteri Nullah and Virugambakkam canal using advanced machinery. Complementing these measures, Anna Nagar saw the installation of a 27,000-litre sump with 30 HP pumps in S Block, redirecting water through new Hume pipes into Otteri Nullah. Two new drains along 4th Main Road and 6th Main Road further streamline the flow, mitigating water stagnation during heavy rains.
These measures exemplify a sustainable approach to urban flood management. By integrating stormwater drains with balancing channels and constructing silt catch pits at manholes, the GCC ensures efficient water flow. Additionally, a curvilinear pathway now redirects Otteri Nullah’s water into the Cooum River, reducing dependency on the nullah for drainage. These solutions not only address current challenges but also enhance resilience to future climatic impacts.
The Federation of Annanagar Residents Associations (FOARA) has lauded the GCC for incorporating community feedback into these plans. With Otteri Nullah now under GCC’s purview, the focus on both short-term relief and long-term resilience reflects a proactive approach to urban development. As Chennai braces for the monsoon, these initiatives promise a safer and more sustainable future for Anna Nagar’s residents.
