Panchkula Municipal Corporation has approved a ₹3.8-crore stormwater drainage project for Sector 19, where recurring monsoon waterlogging has disrupted movement and forced the civic body to depend on fire tenders and temporary pumps.
The Finance and Contract Committee approved a plan to establish a dedicated stormwater pumping station in Ward 9 and lay a rising main pipeline connecting Sector 19 to the main drain in Industrial Area Phase-I. The project is intended to create a permanent drainage mechanism for accumulated rainwater in the low-lying sector.
Sector 19 residents have faced repeated flooding during heavy rainfall, with submerged streets affecting daily movement and contributing to traffic disruption. The municipal corporation has previously relied on temporary arrangements, including fire tenders and portable pumps, to remove standing water during the monsoon.
According to the report, the existing sewerage network in the area is about four decades old and has not kept pace with current urban requirements. During the rainy season, its limited capacity has contributed to street flooding and sewage backflow, increasing the disruption for residents.
The planned pumping station is expected to increase the area’s stormwater drainage capacity. Water collected in Sector 19 would be pumped through the proposed rising main pipeline towards the main drain in Industrial Area Phase-I, providing a dedicated outlet for runoff rather than relying on emergency water-removal operations.
The project’s approval places the intervention within the municipal corporation’s infrastructure and contract process. The source report does not provide a construction start date, completion deadline, tender schedule or details of the pumping station’s designed capacity.
The decision also highlights the operational limits of treating recurring urban flooding as a seasonal emergency. For years, the civic response in Sector 19 has involved deploying temporary equipment after streets became waterlogged. The approved project instead proposes a fixed pumping asset and pipeline connection for a location identified as vulnerable to monsoon accumulation.
The corporation’s next steps will determine when work begins and how quickly the new drainage system becomes operational. Details on the tender, construction timeline and the project’s final technical specifications were not included in the report.
