Jaipur Food Safety Drive Targets Adulterated Mawa Before Diwali

Jaipur’s health and food safety authorities have intensified inspections of mawa, edible oil, ghee, sweets and other high-demand food products before Diwali, while officials in Bikaner seized around 22,000 kg of edible oil from a warehouse during a related enforcement campaign.

The Jaipur health department is preparing a special drive to prevent adulterated or poor-quality mawa from reaching sweet manufacturers and consumers during the festive season. Officials said the rise in demand for traditional sweets before Diwali often results in large quantities of substandard mawa being transported into the city from neighbouring districts.

Additional Commissioner Bhagwat Singh said enforcement had been stepped up, with teams focusing on the manufacture, storage, transportation and sale of food products. The inspections will also examine labelling and suspected adulteration, according to officials.

Teams are expected to monitor supply routes, wholesale markets, sweet manufacturing units and storage facilities. Suspected mawa and other food products will be collected as samples and sent for laboratory testing. Officials said action could be taken against suppliers, traders and manufacturers found handling unsafe or substandard material.

Depending on the nature of the violation, action under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, and related rules may include sample testing, seizure of products, suspension or cancellation of licences and prosecution, officials said. Firms with identified deficiencies may also receive improvement notices.

The wider enforcement operation has already resulted in a major seizure in Bikaner. The food safety department confiscated around 22,000 kg of edible oil from a warehouse in the Beechwal Industrial Area on Sunday under its “Shuddh Aahar–Milawat Par Vaar” campaign.

The seized products included Nepal-manufactured “Choice” brand sunflower oil and “Baba Ramdev Chhap” mustard oil stored at the premises of M/s Laxmi Narayan Bhanwar Lal. Three edible-oil samples were collected for testing. The department is also examining the labelling and promotion of the “Choice” sunflower oil for possible misleading claims.

A food safety team inspected three establishments in Bikaner and collected six samples in a single day. These included a coconut peda sample from Nagad Narayan Agro Industries and two samples from the manufacturing unit of Shri Bishanlal Babulal in the Rani Bazaar Industrial Area.

The Jaipur inspections place the city’s festive food market under scrutiny at multiple points in the supply chain, from incoming products and wholesale storage to manufacturing units and retail sale. Officials said further action would follow laboratory reports and the findings of inspections, while improvement notices would be issued to firms where deficiencies were detected.
