Kochi Traffic Drive Finds 122 Violations, Fines Cross Rs 1.84 Lakh

The Ernakulam enforcement motor vehicles department detected 122 traffic violations and imposed fines totalling Rs 1,84,750 during a special inspection drive across Kochi and other parts of the district on Saturday, with officials focusing on conduct and vehicle conditions that can affect road safety.

The operation covered key transport and urban activity hubs including Aluva, Fort Kochi, Mattancherry and Kakkanad. According to the department, enforcement teams acted against illegal parking, high-intensity lights that can obstruct the vision of oncoming drivers, noisy horns and unauthorised alterations to vehicles.

Of the 122 violations detected, 53 cases were registered against vehicles including cars and motorcycles. Seven cases involved illegal alterations. The department also took action against vehicles being operated without meeting prescribed safety standards and those without valid insurance or fitness certificates.

The categories targeted in the inspection connect routine traffic enforcement with broader risks on Kochi’s busy roads. Illegal parking can reduce usable carriageway space and interfere with movement around transport hubs. Excessively bright lights can impair the vision of approaching drivers at night, while noisy horns contribute to traffic-related noise pollution. Vehicle alterations and operation without required safety documentation can also affect whether a vehicle is fit for public roads.

The figures released by the department do not provide a location-wise breakdown of the 122 cases or identify how many vehicles were linked to each category of offence. They also do not specify the number of vehicles seized, licences suspended or cases taken forward through further proceedings. The available information records the total fines and the main offence groups addressed during the drive.

The enforcement action covered both traffic behaviour and vehicle compliance. This is significant for urban road users because traffic safety depends not only on movement discipline but also on the mechanical condition and legal fitness of vehicles sharing the road. Insurance and fitness certificates are among the documents used to establish whether vehicles meet the requirements for operation.

The Ernakulam MVD said strict enforcement would continue in the coming days. Officials said inspections would be intensified to protect passengers and other road users, prevent traffic violations and reduce accident risks.

The department’s next step, according to the statement, is continued inspection across the district, including further enforcement at key locations and against the categories of violations identified during the special drive.
