Pune–Bengaluru Vande Bharat Sleeper Could Cut Overnight Trip

The proposed Pune-Bengaluru Vande Bharat Sleeper Express could reduce the overnight rail journey to between 12 and 15 hours if the planned Mumbai-Bengaluru service receives a confirmed Pune halt and begins operations as indicated by the Union Ministry of Railways. A possible launch date of November 1 has been announced by Union Minister of State for Railways V. Somanna, but the final timetable and operating details are yet to be released.

The proposed service is expected to connect Mumbai and Bengaluru through Kalyan, Pune, Solapur, Kalaburagi, Raichur, Guntakal and Anantapur. For passengers boarding at Pune, the train could provide a direct overnight option to Bengaluru, removing the need to travel to Mumbai to access the service if the Pune stop is retained in the final plan.

The reported journey time between Mumbai and Bengaluru is around 16 to 18 hours, compared with approximately 22 hours on existing services. Preliminary estimates indicate that a train leaving Mumbai at about 10.30 pm could reach Pune at approximately 1.50 am before continuing south towards Bengaluru. It could arrive in Bengaluru at around 2.50 pm the following day. In the reverse direction, the proposed train could leave Bengaluru at about 10 pm, reach Pune at approximately 10.35 am and arrive in Mumbai around 1.50 pm.

These timings are indicative and do not constitute a confirmed railway schedule. Railway authorities have not yet announced the final station halts, departure and arrival timings, ticket prices or the date on which reservations would open. The actual travel time, including the duration of the Pune halt, will depend on the timetable and operating arrangements approved for the service.

The proposal follows a reported trial run on the Mumbai-Pune section. The train is planned as a sleeper service with 16 coaches: 11 three-tier AC coaches, four two-tier AC coaches and one first-class AC coach. Its estimated capacity is around 823 berths, providing sleeping accommodation for passengers travelling between Maharashtra and Karnataka.

For Pune residents, the service would add an overnight rail connection to Bengaluru for work and other travel, while allowing passengers to use sleeping berths on a long-distance route. Its practical value will depend on whether Pune is included as a confirmed halt, how the final timings align with passenger demand and whether fares are competitive with existing travel options.

The proposed November 1 launch and the service details still require confirmation through the official railway timetable and related announcements. Railway authorities are yet to publish the final schedule, fare structure, reservation opening date and confirmed list of stations.
