The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has expanded its road-preparation plan for the Pune Grand Tour 2027 after the cycling event’s route within the city increased to 134 km from 75 km in the previous edition. The civic body will improve riding surfaces, coordinate pending utility work and temporarily remove speed breakers and rumblers along the race corridor before the competition begins on January 26.
The six-stage Pune Grand Tour 2027 is scheduled to run from January 26 to January 31 and will cover 1,088 km across Pune district. The wider city route has brought several additional road stretches into the PMC’s preparation programme, requiring the civic body to coordinate road repairs with agencies working on underground and surface-level infrastructure.
According to the plan reported by Pune Mirror, the PMC has identified 84 km of newly added routes for riding-surface improvements. Roads affected by utility trenches will be repaired, while damaged or uneven footpaths along the route will also be addressed. The work is intended to make the designated stretches suitable for cyclists travelling at competitive speeds.
The preparation involves coordination with agencies carrying out work related to water pipelines, drainage networks, underground electricity cables, gas connections, CCTV systems and optical fibre lines. PMC road officials are working with these agencies to prevent delays and complete their activities before the event begins.
Utility chambers and manholes are receiving particular attention. The PMC plans to bring covers level with the surrounding road surface because uneven chambers and poorly restored trenches can create hazards for cyclists. The issue also reflects a recurring challenge on city roads, where multiple agencies undertake excavation and reinstatement work at different times.
The civic body will temporarily remove speed breakers along the race route. Raised road strips, commonly known as rumblers, that could interfere with cyclists’ movement will also be removed or levelled before the event. These measures are limited to the designated race corridor and are linked to the requirements of a competitive cycling route.
PMC officials plan to restore the speed breakers after the race. The reconstructed traffic-calming structures will be built according to Indian Roads Congress standards, according to the report. This means the temporary changes are expected to be followed by reinstatement work once the competition concludes.
The route expansion increases the amount of road and utility coordination required within Pune. Compared with the previous edition, the city section is now 59 km longer, while the newly included stretches account for 84 km of planned riding-surface improvements. The civic body’s preparations therefore involve not only event logistics but also the sequencing of repairs, trench restoration and public-road infrastructure works.
The PMC’s next steps are to complete the identified road repairs, level utility covers, address damaged footpaths and coordinate the removal and later restoration of traffic-calming structures before and after the January 26–31 event.
