Maharashtra Ration Cards: Congress to Protest 4,777 Closures

The Mangalwedha taluka Congress committee will hold a protest on October 26 demanding the restoration of 4,777 ration cards that were deactivated under the Mission Sudhar scheme and the regular supply of foodgrains to eligible beneficiaries who hold ration cards but are not receiving their quota.

The sit-in protest will begin at 10 am outside the tehsil office. It will be led by Member of Parliament Praniti Shinde, according to a report by Sakal. The Congress has also submitted a memorandum to the Mangalwedha police station regarding the planned demonstration.

The deactivation of the ration cards has reportedly left several poor and needy families without access to foodgrains distributed through Maharashtra’s public distribution system. The Congress has said that the issue needs to be resolved by restoring the affected cards and ensuring that beneficiaries who remain eligible receive their regular allocation.

The protest follows an earlier representation by Shinde to the Solapur district collector, seeking the reactivation of the cards. The latest agitation is intended to draw the administration’s attention to families that have allegedly continued to remain without foodgrain support, including during the festive period.

Apart from restoring the 4,777 cards, the Congress has demanded that new ration cards be issued to poor and needy families who qualify for support but do not currently have access to the system. The demands place responsibility on the local administration to examine the status of deactivated cards, identify eligible households and address complaints from beneficiaries who have ration cards but are not receiving grain.

The Mission Sudhar exercise and the reasons for the individual deactivations were not detailed in the report. The report also did not specify the number of beneficiaries linked to the 4,777 cards or provide a response from the tehsil or district administration to the Congress’s demands.

The planned sit-in will therefore focus on the restoration of the cards, continuation of foodgrain distribution for eligible cardholders and the issuance of new cards to qualifying households. Congress taluka president Prashant Sale and city president advocate Rahul Ghule provided information about the protest, which is scheduled to take place at the Mangalwedha tehsil office on October 26.
