Silchar Drain Wall Collapses Within 24 Hours, Raising Quality Concerns

The Silchar drain wall collapse on Kathal Road, less than 24 hours after a section was concreted, has raised concerns among residents about construction quality and supervision on an ongoing culvert-cum-drain project near the Bank Colony-Laskar Lane junction.

Workers engaged by the contractor completed concreting a section of the drain on Thursday, according to the report. Part of the newly built wall collapsed on Friday afternoon. The incident occurred while construction work was continuing on the road, prompting residents to seek an immediate inspection of the failed section.

Residents alleged that poor-quality materials or inadequate supervision may have contributed to the collapse. They have called for an inquiry into the materials used, the construction methods followed and whether the work complied with engineering specifications and prescribed quality-control measures.

The affected project involves a culvert-cum-drain on Kathal Road. The failure has also drawn attention to the practical difficulties created by the ongoing work. Residents said excavation of roads and drains without adequate alternative arrangements had disrupted movement in the area, making daily commuting difficult for pedestrians, elderly people and children.

Residents have urged senior officials from the department concerned to conduct quality tests on the construction and take action if irregularities are established. Their demands place the focus not only on the collapsed wall but also on the inspection and supervision systems used during public infrastructure projects.

The incident has become a local test of how quickly authorities respond when newly executed civic works fail. The report did not include a response from the department or contractor, and it remains to be established through an official inspection whether material quality, construction practice, supervision or another factor caused the collapse.

Residents are awaiting action from the authorities, including an inspection of the site and quality tests on the work completed so far.
