The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) will upgrade roads, repair utility trenches and temporarily remove speed breakers along a 134-km city route being prepared for the Pune Grand Tour 2027, scheduled from January 26 to 31. The civic body has identified 84 km of newly added roads for riding-surface improvements as the route expands beyond the previous edition’s 75 km coverage.
The six-stage cycling competition will cover 1,088 km across Pune district. Within the city, the expanded route has increased the number of road stretches requiring preparation, including sections affected by utility work, damaged footpaths and uneven surfaces.
PMC road officials are coordinating with agencies working on water pipelines, drainage networks, underground electricity cables, gas connections, CCTV systems and optical fibre lines. Roads damaged by trenches dug for these installations will be repaired before the event, according to the report.
Utility chambers and manholes along the race corridor will also receive attention. Their covers must be level with the surrounding road surface because uneven covers and poorly restored trenches can create risks for cyclists travelling at speed. The PMC is coordinating with the agencies involved to prevent pending works from delaying the route preparations.
The civic body will temporarily remove speed breakers along the designated race corridor. Raised road strips, commonly called rumblers, that could obstruct cyclists will also be removed or levelled before the competition. The measures are intended specifically to make the route suitable for competitive cycling during the event.
PMC plans to restore the speed breakers after the race. The reconstructed installations will be built in accordance with Indian Roads Congress standards, according to the report. This means the temporary changes to the road corridor are linked to the event period rather than a permanent removal of traffic-calming infrastructure.
The expanded route places additional preparation requirements on the civic body because more roads now need surface repairs, obstacle removal and coordination with multiple utility agencies. The PMC’s work will continue ahead of the Pune Grand Tour 2027, with the route scheduled to be ready before the event begins on January 26.
