A new Hyderabad bus terminal will be built at the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation’s Uppal Zonal Workshop within 100 days, with the Rs 3.22 crore project expected to handle 1,053 city bus trips a day and serve nearly one lakh passengers.
Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar laid the foundation stone for the terminal on Saturday. The project is being developed with financial support from the Malkajgiri Municipal Corporation and is intended to ease commuting difficulties for residents of Uppal, Boduppal and Peerzadiguda.
The facility will be used exclusively for city bus operations, according to TGSRTC Managing Director Y Nagireddy. District services to destinations including Yadagirigutta, Warangal and the erstwhile Nalgonda district will continue to operate from the existing Uppal bus station.
The separation of city and district services is expected to define how the two facilities function within the Uppal transport network. While the new terminal will focus on high-volume urban routes, the existing bus station will continue to serve longer-distance services, according to the details released about the project.
The new terminal is planned to include a dedicated bus pass counter and an enquiry centre. These facilities are intended to provide passengers with access to ticketing and service information at the terminal rather than requiring them to use separate arrangements.
The terminal is expected to improve connectivity from surrounding localities to Secunderabad, Mehdipatnam, Hyderabad’s IT corridor and Patancheru. The stated daily capacity of 1,053 bus trips places the project within the city’s regular public transport operations rather than as a facility limited to occasional or intercity services.
For commuters in Uppal, Boduppal and Peerzadiguda, the project brings a new interchange point closer to residential areas that currently depend on existing bus facilities and road connections. The passenger estimate of nearly one lakh a day also indicates the scale at which the terminal has been planned to operate once completed.
The financial arrangement involves the Malkajgiri Municipal Corporation, while the bus operations and service configuration will be managed by TGSRTC. This places the project at the intersection of municipal funding and state-run public transport delivery.
The government has set a 100-day completion target from the foundation-stone stage. The next formal milestone for commuters and the transport authorities will be the completion of construction and the commencement of city bus services at the new Uppal terminal.
