The newly synchronised 800-MW unit at Telangana’s Yadadri Thermal Power Station has recorded a peak load of 158.7 MW during its initial coal-firing trial, moving the state’s largest thermal power project closer to full commissioning.
Telangana Power Generation Corporation Limited (TG Genco) said the fifth unit was synchronised to the grid on October 20. The unit was subsequently hand-tripped to allow preparatory works to be completed. Its commercial operation date is expected in November 2026.
Once the unit enters commercial operation, the Yadadri Thermal Power Station (YTPS) will reach its full installed capacity of 4,000 MW. Four units at the station are already operating commercially and currently supply between 1,800 MW and 2,300 MW to the Telangana state grid.
The trial run and commissioning process are being supported by coal supplies from the Naini block, with four to five rakes arriving daily, according to the report. Additional coal from Mahanadi Coalfields Limited is being mobilised under Window-II of the SHAKTI Policy-2025.
Coal-handling capacity is also being expanded at the plant. Upgrades to the Coal Handling Plant, being carried out with Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited, are expected to be completed by the end of October. The improvements are intended to raise the facility’s rated handling capacity to 2,500 tonnes per hour and allow the plant to unload between 12 and 14 rakes a day.
The logistics arrangements are important to the plant’s operating capacity because the fifth unit’s commercial commissioning will require sustained fuel movement alongside the station’s existing generation. The supplied report does not specify the unit’s projected annual generation or the additional demand it is intended to meet.
The commissioning work is being monitored by Telangana Special Chief Secretary (Energy) Navin Mittal and TG Genco chairman and managing director Dr S. Harish. The officials are overseeing the project through site inspections and twice-daily reviews, TG Genco said.
The next formal milestone is the expected commercial operation of the 800-MW unit in November 2026. Until then, the unit remains in the preparatory and commissioning phase rather than regular commercial generation.
