Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay has directed district collectors to take timely and effective action during emergency situations as the northeast monsoon brings widespread rain and heavy-rain warnings to several parts of the state. The instructions were issued during a review of monsoon preparedness at the State Emergency Operations Centre in Chepauk, Chennai.
The Chief Minister inspected the preparedness work in person and held a video conference with collectors from 18 districts where the weather centre had issued heavy-rain warnings. The districts named in the report include the Nilgiris, Dindigul, Coimbatore, Theni, Madurai, Virudhunagar, Tenkasi, Kanniyakumari and Tirunelveli.
The review focused on preventing deaths during periods of heavy rain and flooding. Collectors were instructed to carry out precautionary measures and ensure that appropriate safety arrangements were in place, according to the report by Dinamalar.
The Chief Minister also asked district administrations to strengthen coordination between all departments involved in responding to monsoon-related impacts. The direction places responsibility on district-level administration to ensure that departments work together when rain or flooding creates an emergency situation.
The instructions covered the need for timely response as conditions develop. District collectors were told to act effectively according to the nature of each emergency, rather than wait until the effects of heavy rain or flooding intensify. The report did not provide details of specific evacuation orders, relief camps, road closures or rainfall measurements in the districts under review.
The meeting brought together senior officials from the revenue and disaster management administration. Revenue Minister Sengottaiyan, Chief Secretary Saikumar, Revenue Administration Commissioner Chandramohan, Revenue and Disaster Management Department Secretary Palanisamy and Commissioner Sivagnanam were present during the review.
Tamil Nadu’s current monsoon response is therefore being managed through a combination of state-level monitoring and district-level coordination. The Chief Minister’s instructions, as reported, centre on preventing loss of life, maintaining safety arrangements and ensuring that departments respond promptly to emerging emergencies. Further operational details will depend on district-level assessments and the continuing weather warnings.
