Mormugao Port Authority (MPA) is taking significant steps towards reducing its carbon footprint by introducing electric vehicles and hybrid cranes as part of its sustainability initiatives. In a move to modernise operations and support the national vision of carbon neutrality, MPA will deploy battery-powered trucks and hybrid-electric harbour cranes for container handling, marking a shift towards greener port operations.
Currently, diesel-powered trucks operate within the port, contributing to pollution and emissions. However, Delta Ports Mormugao Terminal Pvt Ltd, the private operator for berths 10 and 11, plans to introduce 28-ton electric tipper trucks by January 2025, replacing diesel trucks. These zero-emission trucks will align with MPA’s goal to transition to a fully electrified port in the coming years. The port will also welcome two Liebherr mobile harbour cranes, powered by both diesel engines and electric motors, capable of handling up to 38 containers per hour. These cranes, imported from Germany, will enhance operational efficiency while reducing emissions.
With MPA generating 32,000 tonnes of carbon emissions annually, the introduction of these green technologies is a significant step towards its goal of carbon neutrality by 2047, in line with national sustainability initiatives. The move will also improve operational productivity, making Mormugao Port one of India’s leading examples of sustainable port operations. This green transformation is expected to contribute to cleaner air and a healthier environment for the local community.
