Greater Noida Authority has started installing grass grids along the 130-metre road to reduce dust from exposed roadside soil, improve greenery and allow rainwater to seep into the ground.
The work has begun on the footpaths and vacant roadside spaces along the road, where interlocking blocks are being installed. The blocks have open spaces in their design, allowing grass to grow through them while creating a more structured surface along areas that would otherwise remain covered with loose soil.
According to the Greater Noida Authority, exposed soil beside roads can become a source of dust when vehicles pass or strong winds blow across the surface. The resulting dust can spread into nearby areas and contribute to local air pollution. The grass-grid intervention is intended to stabilise these spaces and reduce the amount of soil released into the air.
The blocks are also designed to allow rainwater to pass through the gaps instead of collecting on the surface. The authority said this could support roadside drainage and help rainwater reach the ground, although the source report does not provide project-level estimates for recharge, dust reduction or the total area to be covered.
The first phase is being implemented on the 130-metre road, which runs from Gaur Chowk in Greater Noida West to Sirsa. The road is also planned to be developed as a model road. The authority’s decision links the roadside treatment to the broader development of the corridor, including its appearance and environmental management.
Greater Noida Authority Chief Executive Officer N. G. Ravi Kumar said environmental considerations were being kept in focus alongside development works, which was why grass grids were being used. The authority has not disclosed in the report the project’s cost, the installation schedule, the type of grass selected or the maintenance arrangement after installation.
The intervention addresses a recurring urban-management problem: roadside spaces that are neither fully paved nor maintained as landscaped areas can become informal dust sources. At the same time, replacing every open surface with a fully sealed pavement can reduce the area available for water infiltration. Grass grids are intended to combine a stable walking or roadside surface with planted gaps and some permeability.
The immediate implementation on the 130-metre road will indicate how the authority manages planting, cleaning, watering and repairs in spaces exposed to heavy traffic and seasonal weather. The authority’s next steps, including the extent to which the treatment is expanded along the road or adopted elsewhere in Greater Noida, have not been specified in the report.
