Mumbai Metro Line 9 Phase II Set for December Opening

Mumbai Metro Line 9’s Phase II, linking Kashigaon with Subhash Chandra Bose Stadium in Mira-Bhayandar, is expected to be ready for passengers in December after safety clearance from the Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CMRS), according to the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA).

The four-station extension will connect Sai Baba Nagar, Meditya Nagar, Shaheed Bhagat Singh Garden and Subhash Chandra Bose Stadium. Civil and systems work is expected to be completed before MMRDA invites the CMRS to inspect the stretch and issue the mandatory safety certification. Passenger operations can begin only after that clearance is granted.

The first phase of Metro Line 9, between Dahisar East and Kashigaon, opened to the public in April 2026. The corridor is an extension of Metro Line 7, which runs from Dahisar East to Gundavali in Andheri East. Once Phase II becomes operational, residents of Mira-Bhayandar will have a direct metro connection to the existing western suburban metro network.

The extension is intended to provide an alternative to road-based travel for commuters travelling towards Andheri and other parts of Mumbai. Mira-Bhayandar’s growing residential population has increased daily travel demand, while many residents currently depend on roads and suburban trains for journeys into the city.

According to MMRDA, Metro Line 9 could reduce travel time by between 50% and 75%, depending on prevailing road traffic conditions. The authority expects the corridor to improve the predictability of peak-hour journeys, when congestion on the Western Express Highway and crowding on suburban railway services create regular delays for commuters.

The line’s impact will depend on how many commuters shift to the metro, the frequency of services and the ease of interchange with Metro Line 7. The corridor’s ability to reduce pressure on the Western Express Highway and existing suburban services will therefore become clearer after Phase II enters passenger operation.

For the immediate next step, MMRDA must complete the remaining civil and systems work and arrange the CMRS inspection. The four-station section can open to passengers after the safety certification is secured.
