Mira-Bhayandar Water Cut Begins as Supply Shutdowns Expand

Mira-Bhayandar will face a 10 per cent water cut, with weekly supply shutdowns through the STEM and MIDC networks, as the civic body moves to conserve reserves amid concerns over below-normal rainfall, an early monsoon withdrawal and the impact of El Nino.

The Mira-Bhayandar Municipal Corporation said the measure was being implemented in accordance with government directives to ensure that water stored in the Vaarvi Dam lasts until August 31, 2027. The decision was set out in a civic notice dated October 18 and issued by Deepak Khobragade, city engineer of the municipal corporation.

Under the revised schedule, water supplied through the STEM Water Distribution and Infrastructure Company will remain suspended every week from 9 am on Wednesday until 3 am on Thursday. This amounts to an 18-hour interruption. Supply through the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation, or MIDC, will be suspended from midnight on Thursday until noon on Saturday, resulting in a 36-hour shutdown.

The civic body warned that water supply to Mira-Bhayandar would be reduced and delayed following the scheduled interruptions. Residents have been asked to use water judiciously and plan their consumption during, and immediately after, the shutdown periods.

Mira-Bhayandar receives water from both STEM and MIDC, making the weekly schedules relevant to different parts of the municipal area depending on the network serving them. The notice does not specify separate ward-level timings or identify which localities will experience the greatest impact from each supply interruption.

The corporation cited below-normal postmonsoon rainfall, the early withdrawal of the monsoon in October 2026 and the influence of El Nino as factors behind concerns over water availability in the coming year. It said the 10 per cent reduction was intended to manage available stock and prevent a potential shortage in the months ahead.

The measure forms part of wider planning by civic bodies in Maharashtra to maintain supplies until August 31, 2027. Mumbai has also announced a 10 per cent water cut as the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation seeks to manage its existing reserves amid similar concerns over rainfall and El Nino.

For residents, the immediate operational effect will be longer gaps between supply cycles and possible delays after scheduled restoration. The Mira-Bhayandar civic body has urged households to store and use water carefully while the restrictions remain in force. Further details on the implementation of the citywide reduction and any changes to the schedule are expected through municipal communications.
